up to −60%

In retirement, your income is often only a fraction of your final salary.

In many cases, the 1st and 2nd pillars only cover about 40% of your final salary — a drop of up to 60%. The 3rd pillar bridges this gap, and it is the most accessible tax lever available.

💡
The good news: every franc paid into your 3rd pillar reduces your taxable income.
📉

The income gap

Without a 3rd pillar, your standard of living inevitably drops in retirement.

🧾

Overpaid tax

A large share of working people are unaware of the real tax savings the 3rd pillar offers.

Time working for you

The earlier you start, the more your capital grows over the years.

Why open a 3rd pillar

Three good reasons to act now

The 3rd pillar isn't just retirement savings: it's a tool for tax, wealth-building, and protection.

🧾

You pay less tax

Every contribution is deductible from your taxable income. The saving is immediate, from your very next tax return.

📈

You prepare for retirement

You build up capital that tops up the 1st and 2nd pillars — as a pension, as a lump sum, or both.

🛡️

You protect yourself and your loved ones

Depending on the solution, the 3rd pillar covers death and incapacity to work: security for your family.

Dependent children affect your tax rate.

Cap for 2026: CHF 7,258/year for an employee affiliated with a pension fund.

Everything about the 3rd pillar

Pillar 3a: up to CHF 7,258/year if you are an employee affiliated with a pension fund; up to CHF 36,288 (20% of income) for a self-employed person not affiliated with a pension fund.

Pillar 3b: no federal cap, but a deduction is only possible in the cantons of Geneva and Fribourg. In Geneva, up to CHF 2,324/year, or up to CHF 4,434/year if you have neither a 2nd pillar nor a 3a. In Fribourg, up to CHF 750/year for a single person, or CHF 1,500/year for a married couple.
Pillar 3a: it is tied to your occupational pension (LPP). It is capped at CHF 7,258/year for employees affiliated with a pension fund; for self-employed people not affiliated with a pension fund, the limit is 20% of income, up to a maximum of CHF 36,288. It offers a tax advantage: contributions are deductible from income and the capital is exempt from wealth tax. However, it is taxed on withdrawal (at a reduced rate).

Pillar 3b: it is more flexible: it has no contribution limit, but is tax-deductible only in Geneva and Fribourg. The capital is not taxed on withdrawal, but it is subject to wealth tax throughout the term of the contract.
It depends on your status. If you are taxed at source in Switzerland with quasi-resident status (≥ 90% of income earned in Switzerland), the 3rd pillar can reduce your tax bill through subsequent ordinary taxation. We assess your eligibility free of charge.
Pillar 3a: it can be withdrawn at retirement or, at the earliest, 5 years before the statutory retirement age (i.e. from age 60). It can also be released early in certain cases: purchase of a primary residence, permanent departure from Switzerland, starting a self-employed activity, or disability. If you keep working past age 65, you can defer the withdrawal by up to 5 years.

Pillar 3b: it is available at any time, with no conditions.
Pillar 3a: the capital is locked in until age 60, with some exceptions: financing your primary residence (down payment, renovation, or mortgage repayment), moving abroad, becoming self-employed, disability, or death.

Pillar 3b: no lock-in. You can withdraw at any time, with no conditions.
Yes, subject to the conditions set out in your contract. It is often possible to increase, decrease, or temporarily suspend your contributions, particularly if your personal situation changes — for example unemployment, divorce, or a drop in income.
